Qi Gong Breathing
Qi Gong And Breathing – What Is The Connection?
Qi Gong and breathing. The connection is this. When you break down Qi Gong to its basic elements, you could say it is focusing your mind on your body and your breath. Breathing is an integral part of any Qi Gong practise. As you can see from the diagram above, when we do not breathe properly, our body does not work properly. Because of the way the brain works, we cannot decipher a real or imagined threat. Many of us are walking around in the fight or flight state of our nervous system. This wears down your body, which wears down your health.
Basically, when you breathe deeply, and relax, you come into the parasympathetic nervous state. And your body starts to work properly once again. The body is intelligent. It is self-regulating and self-healing. This aspect of your body does not work properly if you are in the sympathetic nervous state. Additionally, your sleep starts to improve. Your digestion improves. And many other elements to your health start to heal and repair also. Stress is responsible for around 90-95% of the issues in the body. We can overcome that with Qi Gong Breathing.
What Can I Do To Help My Situation?
You must start a deep breathing practise every day. It is a simple case for you to retrain your body into being in the parasympathetic nervous state again. Most of us have been stressed for so long. We have forgotten how to relax. I have set up a charity called Brighter Living to help the elderly with their health and well-being. And during the Qi Gong breathing and meditation part of the class, they can sit still and peacefully. And they all say they have never been able to do that before.
You can change with a deep breathing practise. In fact, it is quite remarkable how quickly the benefits kick in. So much so, I use deep breathing techniques at the beginning of the Dream Method coaching and online course. It is the most effective technique to reset your nervous system back to the parasympathetic state.
Two Major Forms Of Qi Gong Breathing
Dahn Jon Breathing
Either standing or seated, straighten your back and place both your hands on your lower abdomen. Both thumbs should be covering or just over the belly button. Close your eyes and start breathing into your hands. Use your imagination well here. This is called Dahn Jon breathing. Your lower abdomen comes up like a balloon. Much like a baby breathes. And then let the abdomen fall back to its natural position of being relaxed. Don’t force anything, but fill the lower abdomen with as much air as you can. Slow your breathing down as much as possible without feeling laboured. Keep going for as long as you can. 3–5 minutes is a good start.
If you want to go a little more advanced, introduce your kidneys into this practise. As your lower Dahn Jon pushes out, push your kidneys out as well. This really opens up the lower abdomen region and helps you get air deeper into your lungs. This will ease the body back into the parasympathetic nervous state. You will feel much better after this practise if you are feeling stressed or anxious before it.
Taoist Breathing Technique
This technique is a little more complicated. Once you learn it, it becomes easier. You can do this standing, seated or even lying down. Get yourself in a relaxed state of mind and body. And start to become aware of your breathing. What we are going to do here is breathe in for the slow count of 10 and then breathe out for the count of one, with a sharp out take of breath. Repeat this five times. Then go back to normal breathing for a few breaths.
Then reverse this technique. Take a sharp inhalation of breath for the count of one. Then breathe out counting to 10. Do this in your mind. Repeat five times also. And then take a few normal breaths after you have finished.
Monitor your mind and body while you are doing this. And see if it is easier to exhale or inhale for the count of 10. Also if this becomes easy, take it up to the count of 20.
There are many forms of Qi Gong breathing and we have mentioned just a few here. We cover many more at the Bright Beings Academy. It really is time to start a breathing practise today because of the stressful way we live today.

Sometimes it can be hard to take on something new. And you probably are the same as so many people where you feel so overwhelmed with everything, you can’t take something new on. Look at it like this. Write down everything you do. See how busy you are. Now start cutting things out that do not serve your health or your higher purpose. That will give you the time to continue your breathing practise. You will not regret it. I can guarantee that.
You can start of really simply by breathing mindfully. This will set you up for when you want to take this further. Below is a short video for you to practise mindful breathing just for three minutes. Try this for a week, every morning and evening, and see what happens.
Do this every day, twice a day for 7 days and monitor the results
