Is Meditation Selfish Behaviour?

November 15, 20242 min read

Is meditation selfish behaviour? That could not be further from the truth. When we are going to fly somewhere, the steward or stewardess always instructs us to put on our oxygen masks first, before attempting to help others. This is what meditation is.

It is putting on your oxygen mask before you help other people. It can enable you to empower yourself to help others in a more profound way. Meditation will also enable you to see problems and issues from a different perspective.

Sometimes this could be deemed a higher perspective. At the end of the day, we are all looking at the same picture from a different angle. And to get your best view of the picture, you must be closer to your true self. This enables you to see without cloudy vision.

Then you can share your view of the picture in a succinct and comprehensive way. This can help someone else change their perspective and therefore, change their life. What is selfish about that? Wanting the best for you and the best for the people around you is what is termed today as a win-win situation.

Spending Time Alone Is Important With Meditation

Spending time alone can also be very important. When considering my star sign, and my numerology, I need time on my own to process all the information I receive, and to be able to convey it in a comprehensive manner. When I was a musician, there were times I did not get much time on my own, and therefore was often accused of being a pacificist, an idealist and a dreamer.

I am not any of these. But I do want peace. To see a functioning world that runs the way it should be. I have visions of that deep inside of me. When I try to communicate these feelings and sensations deep inside of me without the use of meditation, I guess I must sound like a pacifist. An idealist and a dreamer. I don’t really care what other people think of me. But I am very aware of what I can do for people, be it good or bad. This empowers me to take control of situations that I am involved with. And I always want the best outcome for all involved. I have learnt this sharing attitude from meditation.
