How To Meditate Properly
Introduction: The Importance of Meditation in Today's World
Stress is everywhere in today’s fast-paced world. From endless to-do lists to the constant demands of modern life, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and disconnected. Stress doesn’t just affect our mental state—it can have serious impacts on physical health, contributing to issues like high blood pressure, insomnia, and weakened immunity.
Meditation offers a powerful antidote to these pressures. This ancient practice helps calm the mind, restore balance, and improve overall well-being. But as simple as meditation might seem, beginners often find themselves unsure of how to get started. That’s why learning proper techniques is essential to reap its full benefits.
Understanding Meditation: Types and Techniques
What Is Meditation?
At its core, meditation is a practice that involves focusing the mind to achieve a state of relaxation, clarity, and heightened awareness. It’s not about forcing your mind to be blank; rather, it’s about observing your thoughts and emotions without judgment. Meditation is a big umbrella for many different practises. And you can find what works best for you the deeper you dive into the practise.
Types of Meditation
There are many types of meditation, each offering unique benefits:
Mindfulness Meditation: Involves being present in the moment and observing your thoughts as they come and go.
Guided Meditation: A teacher or recording leads you through visualisations or calming scenarios.
Mantra Meditation: Repeating a word or phrase to maintain focus and quiet the mind.
Body Scan Meditation: Bringing awareness to different parts of the body to release tension.
Walking Meditation: Using movement and awareness of each step as a meditative practice.
Loving-Kindness Meditation: Focusing on cultivating feelings of compassion for yourself and others.
Moving Meditation: This is really Qi Gong. It really is a fast way to focus your mind on your body and your breath. In today's world, where our brains are conditioned to go out all the time, it is difficult to focus inwards. Because there is movement with Qi Gong, many of my students find this the best way to get into meditation.
Contemplation Meditation: Contemplation meditation is a powerful practice that bridges the creative and analytical capacities of the mind by harmonising the brain's two hemispheres. The right brain, known for its openness to imagination, intuition, and creativity, complements the left brain's focus on logic, structure, and problem-solving.
When these two aspects are consciously brought together in meditation, it creates a state of deep contemplation—a balanced space where insight and understanding flow freely. This practice, rooted in ancient traditions such as the I Ching, encourages meditators to engage both intuition and reason, enabling profound clarity and wisdom.
Through this integrative approach, contemplation meditation allows practitioners to access new perspectives, merge creativity with analysis, and connect with a deeper sense of purpose and harmony.
Basic Meditation Techniques
For beginners, these simple techniques can help ease you into meditation:
Focusing on the Breath: Pay attention to each inhale and exhale.
Using a Mantra: Repeat a calming word or phrase, like "peace" or "calm."
Observing Thoughts and Sensations: Allow thoughts to pass without attaching to them.
Debunking Meditation Myths
Many beginners believe they need to completely empty their minds to meditate effectively. This isn’t true! Meditation is about focus and awareness, not perfection. Thoughts are natural; the key is to gently return your focus whenever your mind wanders.
One of my clients used to be able to sit still for long periods of time, and this did not work. She was not focusing on the right things, but managed to be able to sit still. Once she found the proper way to meditate, this gave her a new perspective on life she did not know was there.
Challenges Faced by Beginners
Starting anything new comes with challenges, and meditation is no exception. Acknowledging these hurdles can help you overcome them more easily.
Common Challenges
Wandering Mind: It’s normal for thoughts to drift. Meditation is about gently bringing your focus back. The Tibetans called this the monkey mind because it jumps all over the place.
Discomfort: Sitting for long periods can feel awkward. Find a comfortable position that works for you.
Time Constraints: Life is busy, but even 5–10 minutes a day can make a difference.
Impatience: Meditation takes time to feel natural. Don’t expect instant results.
The Importance of Patience
Meditation is a skill that grows with practice. Be compassionate with yourself and celebrate small improvements. Many of my students in Qi Gong classes show frustration and irritation because they can't get it quickly enough for them. This is one of the biggest blocks to get over, and when you do, things can change really quickly.

FAQs About Meditation for Beginners

No, you can meditate in any position that feels comfortable, whether it’s sitting in a chair, on the floor, or even lying down. The key is to maintain a posture that keeps you alert but relaxed.
2. How long should I meditate as a beginner?
Start small, with just 5–10 minutes a day. Gradually increase the duration as you grow more comfortable with the practice.
3. What if I can’t stop my mind from wandering?
A wandering mind is completely normal. The practice of meditation lies in gently returning your focus to your breath, mantra, or whatever anchor you’ve chosen.
4. Can I meditate with background noise?
Yes! While a quiet space can be helpful, meditation is about finding calm regardless of your surroundings. Consider using headphones or a guided meditation to tune out distractions.
